What is article marketing? The best definition is that it is advertising, a business either hires a writer or or writes short articles themselves to promote their business. These articles are published and distributed in many places and are available for viewing both in print and on line.

Generally or hopefully readers know who wrote the article or at least the business publishing it. There is usually a bio or resources box at the end of the article which shows references and contacts for the author ar business . This information is placed with the intention of allowing the reader to contact the author or business if they liked the article. This will result in traffic to a website or business , hopefully resulting in a sale.

The concept of article marketing has been around for a long time, some say it was first used when mass printing became available. It was used by entrepreneurs and business firms as a means of obtaining free ad space . The content was given to newspapers free of charge in exchange for business  contact information to be placed with article. Most newspapers were glad to accept this exchange arrangement because of their limited budget to compensate writers for their work.

This arrangement is similar to the process used on line today , authors may post articles with contact information below the content at different web sites as well as their own. The articles may also be placed on sites known as article directories which are sites just for this purpose.

Article directories generally alow articles to be posted free of charge because the owner of the site places advertising on the side and collects revenue from it. As the directory becomes more popular and traffic increases , the site owner as well as the authors benefit from it.

Some directories allow the writer to choose the type of advertising that is places along side their article. also in some places the authors have a choice of having no advertising on their article page, but there are usually a fee for this choice.

There are some differences between printed and on line article marketing, one big difference is an article places on line is categorized and also uses keywords  which allows searches by viewers to locate the subject they are interested in to be found in a matter of seconds.

Article directories like ezine articles and article dashboars are not the only places you will find articles with information on your area of interest. With the next generation of the internet known as web 2.0 or interactive web sites, authors have realized the value of using socal sites like facebook, myspace and linkedin to post their articles also.

Some fear that the dramatic increase in people using article marketing has had a negative effect because it has lowered the quality of the articles being written. To prevent this from happening most article directories and search engines have set quality standards that must be met which aid in keeping articles relevant and informative.

Article marketing is just one way to promote your product or web site, but if you are operating on a limited budget if is the way to begin and grow your business. The main thing to remember about article marketing, if you want to make the most of your marketing effort, is to use relevant keywords when writing your articles. This will allow readers to find your article and read  article and the contact information that follows it.

To choose the best keywords, you have to think what words will a person likely type to see your site. If you are able to figure that out, it won’t be long before you will get a lot of traffic which translates to additional sales to your business.
